Challenges Faced by Women and Minorities in Job Placement and Promotion in Academic Settings: Is Diversity in Mentoring the Key?

Minority faculty, at both assistant and associate professor rank, are lagging in rates of promotion compared with white faculty. In general, they are less likely to be on tenure tracks or to receive NIH awards, the 2 strongest positive predictors of promotion. Similarly, women are substantially less likely than men to be promoted to senior academic positions; about 70% of women are at instructor and assistant professor levels.
