Dear Colleague,
Last month, representatives from 7 leading research institutions released a report warning that continued flat NIH funding for the fifth consecutive year is threatening the future of medical progress in the United States. With only one in four R01s getting funded, and only one quarter of those going to first-time investigators, many promising young scientists are forced to look elsewhere for research jobs--often in industry and sometimes outside of the United States. Scientists who do eventually get funding often must rewrite and resubmit their grant applications two or more times, thereby delaying important research that could lead to cures.
The dream of adequate funding will have to be deferred for a while. President Bush's proposed budget for 2009 keeps NIH funding stagnant, despite his January, 2008, State of the Union address in which he stated, "We must trust in the innovative spirit of medical researchers."
The 20-page report, "A Broken Pipeline? Flat Funding of the NIH Puts a Generation of Science at Risk," is available online at http://www.brokenpipeline.org/brokenpipeline.pdf.
Sincerely,
Stephen J. Bartels, MD, MS; Martha L. Bruce, PhD, MPH; Maureen Halpain, MS; Barry D. Lebowitz, PhD; Charles F. Reynolds III, MD; Gwenn Smith, PhD; Joel E. Streim, MD; Jürgen Unützer, MD, MPH, MA
