Dear Colleague,
How are your management skills? Most scientists have no formal training in it, but managing a lab is not unlike running a small business.
New PIs and postdocs who are setting up their own lab for the first time can gain a solid foothold by learning management skills that will ensure research projects stay on track. Hiring and managing the right research staff, organizing data efficiently, staying on a timeline, and keeping a budget are vital to a project's success. Learning organizational skills can reduce some of the strain junior investigators feel due to funding uncertainties and work/family balance stresses.
Martha L. Bruce, PhD, MPH, addresses these very issues in her December 2007 First Tuesday teleconference presentation on strategies for managing research projects. To view Project Management for Postdocs, click here.
Sincerely,
Stephen J. Bartels, MD, MS; Martha L. Bruce, PhD, MPH; Maureen Halpain, MS; Barry D. Lebowitz, PhD; Charles F. Reynolds III, MD; Gwenn Smith, PhD; Joel E. Streim, MD; Jürgen Unützer, MD, MPH, MA
