July 2008

Dear Colleague,

Winning grants to finance your research is imperative for moving ahead in a research career, but do you know where to look for that all-important funding? The NIH is the primary federal supporter of academic biomedical research, but with a flat budget since 2003 and grants becoming more competitive, researchers need to be aware of funding opportunities outside the NIH as well.

MedEdMentoring's newest original article, Grant Support, can help junior, mid-level, and senior investigators identify the NIH awards that best match their research needs, as well as learn about grant opportunities from private foundations, the VA, and industry. Early-career researchers in particular can benefit from grants and fellowships sponsored by foundations and philanthropic organizations. The Howard Hughes Medical Institute is one example of a private non-profit organization that this year has awarded $600 million in funding to 56 scientists with risky research ideas that would not normally find quarter with the NIH.

To learn about NIH grants and other funding resources, view MedEdMentoring's original article, Grant Support, at http://mededmentoring.org/original_articles.asp.

Sincerely,
Stephen J. Bartels, MD, MS; Martha L. Bruce, PhD, MPH; Maureen Halpain, MS; Barry D. Lebowitz, PhD;
