October 2008

Dear Colleague,

There has long been a dearth of female and racial and ethnic minority investigators in academic biomedical research careers at the highest ranks, suggesting that pitfalls claim the majority of those careers along the way. For instance, women have parity with men as university instructors, but comprise less than 5 percent of full professors. Culprits include high tuition costs; lack of role models and mentors; difficulties balancing work with family responsibilities, and, sometimes, deeply-ingrained bias against these groups by majority (white male) researchers who hold most of the top positions in academic science.

In MedEdMentoring's newest original article, Women and Minorities in Research Careers, we look at obstacles that can stymie a research career and how programs and policies that support these scientists can make a difference. To learn more about the state of women and minorities in academic research careers, view MedEdMentoring's original article at http://mededmentoring.org/original_articles.asp.

Sincerely,
Stephen J. Bartels, MD, MS; Martha L. Bruce, PhD, MPH; Maureen Halpain, MS; Barry D. Lebowitz, PhD;
Charles F. Reynolds III, MD; Gwenn Smith, PhD; Joel E. Streim, MD; Jürgen Unützer, MD, MPH, MA
