September 2008

Dear Colleague,

There comes a time in every researcher's career when they must let go of a mentor. In some cases, the mentor/mentee relationship sours or never takes off because of dissimilar interests or personalities that don't jibe. In other scenarios, the pairing just runs its course: goals are met and projects completed. No matter what leads to the break, maintaining goodwill is beneficial for both parties, but knowing how to make a break without burning a bridge can take finesse.

For some ideas on when and how to say goodbye to a mentor, join us on September 2nd for our First Tuesday teleconference, "Moving on From Mentoring: When to Leave Your Mentor," presented by Daniel Weintraub, MD. Participants may ask questions during the live teleconference, or type them in advance via our site. To register, or for more information, click here.

Sincerely,
Stephen J. Bartels, MD, MS; Martha L. Bruce, PhD, MPH; Maureen Halpain, MS; Barry D. Lebowitz, PhD;
Charles F. Reynolds III, MD; Gwenn Smith, PhD; Joel E. Streim, MD; Jürgen Unützer, MD, MPH, MA
